CHAPTER TWELVE:

The Great Divining

That night they all ate together, around a much larger campfire which Yuna’s friends had helped to build. In all, she had brought twelve other witches, which she said was the perfect number—thirteen was a sacred number to Witans. Most of them had animal familiars with them, which would help them to cast their magic more effectively. As for the others who had come, the ordinary mortals, most of them turned out to be Witan faithful, though some of them were simply people who wanted to follow Tor purely because he was Leobregu. Most of them knew how to fight, and all were more than ready to do anything Tor said without question, which he found extremely uncomfortable.

To try and put them at ease, he told them all his story while they ate the antelope he’d caught—with a side of wild carrots, berries, edible fern tips, and roasted eagle, the last of which raised a few eyebrows.

All of them were keen to hear Tor’s story, which he told simply enough, like a soldier giving a report. There were plenty of questions along the way, of course, and he answered them as well as he could. Everybody who didn’t already know him looked astonished when he told them how long and hard he’d resisted using his powers, and Tor had plenty to say about that.

“Leobregae ruined my life,” he said, a Lion growl ironically emphasising the words. “Now that I am one, I know why. I can feel it in me. This huge, arrogant, savage thing. It’s my duty now to stop it from breaking loose again, and if it does … ” He shuddered.

“You can do it,” said Arven.

“I hope so.” Tor moodily prodded the fire. “Anyway,” he went on, “once we know what Osberga is doing, I’ll … I’ll come up with something.”

Yuna and the other witches stirred, casting excited glances at each other.

“We have everything we need,” one of the men said. He grinned. “All my life I dreamed of casting a Great Divining, but I never thought it would actually happen.”

Arven too looked excited. “Yuna?” he said. “Can … can I watch it?”

The witches exchanged glances, some of them frowning.

They finally looked to Yuna, who said, “You should understand, it’s been a very long time since someone who wasn’t a witch, or a Witan saw one of us cast any kind of spell. It only became that way because we had to hide our powers. You already know what we are, and we know you can be trusted, so I don’t see why not.”

Not all of her fellows looked convinced, but none of them argued.

“Thank you!” said Arven, sounding much more like his old self again.

“You can stay as well, Elona,” said Yuna. “If you want to.”

“Yes, please,” said Elona.

“I’ll stay as well,” said Tor. “Unless … ” He stopped and frowned. “Maybe I shouldn’t. I don’t think the Lion would like it.”

“I’m sure it’ll be fine,” said Arven.

“No,” Tor said reluctantly. “I won’t risk it.
